Walking In The Air

Walking In The Air

WALKING IN THE AIR is the second extract from the band’s second album – Oceanborn. This song is a ballad that has been played many times on stage. This is a cover of Howard Blake’s song and Walking In The Air was used as the soundtrack for the animated movie called “The Snowman”. The original version of the song, sang by George Winston, is one of Tuomas’ favorite songs – this can explain their choice. Many artists have done covers of this song, often as minimalist versions, played with a piano only. Only Nightwish offers a real new interpretation !

Release date: 1999
Written and composed by Howard Blake

01. Walking In The Air (edit) 3'41
02. Nightquest 4'15
03. Tutankhamen 5'30

CDHere is the first 100% Nightwish single, at last! (the previous singles offered bonus tracks with other bands produced by Spinefarm). On this single, we can find the edit version of Walking in the Air (this is the album’s version out of which the two last minutes were unfortunately taken out), the previously unreleased Nightquest (spelled “Nightguest” on the booklet – a mistake that was often made) which is a bonus track on Oceanborn Japanese version, and also a track from their first album, Angels Fall First: Tutankhamen.

This CD is not available anymore in shops but can sometimes be found on Ebay. If you see it, don’t hesitate! The chance may not show later !

We're walking in the air
We're floating in the moonlit sky
The people far below are sleeping as we fly

I'm holding very tight
I'm riding in the midnight blue
I'm finding I can fly so high above with you

Far across the world
The villages go by like trees
The rivers and the hills
The forests and the streams

Children gaze open mouth
Taken by surprise
Nobody down below believes their eyes

We're surfing in the air
We're swimming in the frozen sky
We're drifting over icy
Mountains floating by

Suddenly swooping low on an ocean deep
Arousing of a mighty monster from its sleep

We're walking in the air
We're floating in the midnight sky
And everyone who sees us greets us as we fly

Walking In The Air history :
After Oceanborn’s first single - Sacrament Of Wilderness –Nightwish and Spinefarm Records decided to release a second single in order to continue promoting Oceanborn. The ballad Walking in the Air was then chosen. This song, which is Oceanborn’s last track, is a cover of Howard Blake’s song – yet a much heavier version – and was unfortunately not given a video. We had to wait for Oceanborn’s last “extract” (which is rather a bonus track than a real track from Ocenborn), Sleeping Sun, to enjoy a new video (after The Carpenter’s video).
