Angels Fall First
Angels Fall First
Summary
The beginning of the story of Nightwish. Angels Fall First is the band’s first album but it contains songs which have become “classics” (like Beauty and the Beast). The album sometimes has an acoustic sound (Angels Fall First, Lappi (Lapland)), but also already very heavy (Elvenpath). One can notice that it is the only album on which Emppu plays the bass and Tuomas sings (in such a terrible way that he refused to do it again!)

Release date: 1997
Written by Tuomas Holopainen

Details...

The CarpenterIn order to promote Nightwish's first album and to let people know about the band, Spinefarm Records, Nightwish’s Finish record company, decided to release a single from the album. The Carpenter, quite a special song since Tuomas sings all the verses, was chosen. For the occasion, a video – on which only Tarja appears – was shot!

Premiere Ed.The album Angels Fall First was first produced as a limited (500 copies) and numbered edition which is obviously rare today (you could find it on Ebay a year ago – everybody fought over it for more than 300 Euros!). The track list is different too. The main songs of the album are not on that demo, and two tracks eventually became bonus tracks for the final edition.

Angels Fall First history :
Nightwish’s first album was released in 1997, at last. At the time, the band did not have the success they later had from the release of Oceanborn on – their second album. The line-up was still not complete at that time since Emppu dealt with the guitar (acoustic and electric) and the bass parts. Sami Vanskä had not joined the band yet, although his name is written on the “thanks” page at the end of the album. Yet, Nightwish’s crew was organised since Tero (sound technician, engineer, and roadie for each tour with the band), Ewo (Nightwish’s tour manager) and others already took part in Angels Fall First.
One can also notice that Tuomas was already the only composer for the band even if the booklet states that lyrics were written by Tuomas while the music was composed by the whole band.

Nightwish’s first concert at the Tavastia Club :
liveNightwish luckily gave a few concerts right from 1997, when Angels Fall First came out.
They obviously did not play as headliners but that experience was beneficial though. One of their very first shows took place in a mythical club in Finland – the Tavastia Club. This venue is a reference in Finland and despite their success and the smallness of the room, Nightwish still plays there on every tour. The band played Angels Fall First main songs there – a rare occasion to hear performances of songs which were not played live afterwards (especially a beautiful link between Angels Fall First and Know Why The Nightingale Sings and a duet by Tuomas and Tarja on The Carpenter which could make a few people – band included – smile!)
